The US Patent and Trademark Office officially published a series of Samsung's newly granted design patents today. In round one we cover nine design patents for a multimedia terminal in addition to one for their Smart TV wireless keyboard. The Multimedia terminal is shown to have nine different backside panel designs of which two are presented in our cover graphic. And lastly, we cover Samsung's design win for a visual presenter that appears to be a future design. UPDATE March 29, 2012: Patent Fulfilled with Galaxy S4
Samsung Granted Nine Design Patent for Portable Multimedia Terminals
Samsung has been granted nine design patents today relating to Portable Multimedia Terminals. It's difficult to assess whether Samsung's designs are pointing to a smartphone or iPod touch-like device because several other design patents granted to Samsung today are clearly named "mobile phones." Unlike utility patents, design patents don't provide detailed summaries or patent abstracts. What you see is what you get is about what you have to work with.
Each of the nine designs has a master overview of the device's appearance from varying angles such as a front side, backside, left and right side, top and bottom views. What you see below is just a single graphic from six other of these multimedia terminal patents that illustrate that Samsung designers have provided distinct backside designs with varying patterns.
Once again we stress that we have no indication whatsoever if the backside cover is made of fabric, plastic, rubber or metal.
All nine granted design patents were issued today by the US Patent and Trademark Office. Six of the designs were originally filed in 2011 (May and November) with the remaining three being filed consecutively in Jan/Feb/March 2012.
UPDATE March 29, 2013.
Samsung's marketing website for the Galaxy S4 has Design # 4 as being a textured design which is what their design patents noted above are all about. Another patent fulfilled. Once you're on Samsung's webpage go to the top of the page and click on "Design" and it's the fourth design that presents the image that you see below.
If you've already seen the all-new BlackBerry Z10 smartphone then you know that the backside panel has a customized design pattern on it that has a velvet-like rubber texture to it that's very soft to the touch while providing a snug fit in your hand. Whether this is what Samsung is thinking of bringing to their Galaxy line-up in the future is unknown at this time. UPDATE: Done
Samsung Granted Patent for Visual Presenter
Samsung has been granted a patent today for a visual presenter. I tried to find this on Google and only came up with a few older designs like this one. Whether the granted patent is presenting another design we couldn't find or a next generation of this device is unknown at this time.
Samsung's granted patent for a visual presenter was originally filed in Q1, 2012 and published today by the US Patent and Trademark Office.
Samsung Granted Patent for Smart TV Wireless Keyboard
Samsung has been granted a patent for their wireless keyboard that combines a trackpad and Smart TV controls such as channel changer and volume controls.
Samsung's granted patent D678,280 was originally filed I May 2012 and published today by the US Patent and Trademark Office.
